Thank you for supporting your child’s participation in interscholastic athletics. Please be sure to read through all this information, as it outlines a few changes that have been made for the upcoming school year. As you already know, students who participate in athletics have higher attendance rates, receive better grades, attain higher standardized test scores, are better socialized and are better prepared for the work force than other students. We are hopeful that your son or daughter will gain all these benefits and more from their participation in the athletic program at Brandywine Heights.
As of the 2008-2009 school year, the PIAA ruled in regards to physical exams permitting a student-athlete to receive one physical exam per school year as long as that exam is authorized after June 1st and is comprehensive in nature. If a student plays a second or third sport that year, the student will be issued a recertification form detailing any changes in his/her medical history from the time of the original exam. With respect for this rule change, there are a few guidelines outlined below:
- Even if a student-athlete has gotten his/her first physical of the year, students must sign up each season for the sports that they intend to play. If the student does not sign up for the next consecutive sport season, the athletic office will not be able to issue them the proper paperwork.
- If the student-athlete was injured during his/her first sport of the year, a PIAA CIPPE form must be completed by the attending physician before participating in the second or third sport, despite being cleared to return to play during the initial season. This form may be obtained from the Athletic Training Room or on the BHASD website under the Re-Certification Form.
Brandywine Heights will continue to offer physicals in June for fall athletes, in October for the winter athletes, and again in February before the spring season, at the increased cost of $20.
Again this year, only a PIAA Pre-participation Physical Exam Form will be accepted for athletic physicals. Copies of this form, along with the Second or Third Sport recertification form and the Medical Emergency Form will be available in the high school office, middle school office, athletic office and on the Brandywine Heights website once registration for sports has begun.
Physicals for the 2017-2018 sports seasons will be offered at the high school gymnasium. Winter and Spring physical dates are TBD. Athletes should report according to the following schedule:
5:30pm………………..…Boys entering grades 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12
6:00pm…………………..Girls entering grades 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12
Our physicals will again be conducted by CATC. In combination with their services and our athletic trainers, Jonell Kiechel and Krista Harkenrider, we expect to continue our standard of sports medicine coverage for your student-athlete. If you plan to take advantage of the in-house physicals offered by the school, all completed paperwork must be returned to the athletic office NO LATER than TBA. This procedure began during our 2011-2012 physicals at the request of Dr. Kohl and The Reading Health System. Walk-ins will not be accepted. If we do not have your paperwork, you will not be seen by our physicians and you will be responsible for getting a pre-participation physical for the upcoming season. The fee for physicals is $20 per student, payable by cash or check to “BHASD”.
As of the 2012-2013 school year, due to budget constraints there will no longer be a Middle School study hall available for students. Because of this, if a student-athlete’s practice does not begin promptly after school, students will need to be supervised by a member of BHASD faculty or staff, or leave school grounds until their scheduled practice time.
Please also remember the Student Activity Fee, a one-time charge of $60 for the year, is due before starting the first sport of the year. This payment may be made with cash or check, made payable to BHASD, and can be remitted to the athletic office at Brandywine Heights High School.
We hope this information helps to clarify any confusion that may have existed in regards to the sport physical process.
If you have further questions regarding the PIAA physical paperwork, please feel free to contact our head Athletic Trainer, Jonell Kiechel at Jonkie@bhasd.org
